![]() | During August, between the 18th and 21st, a handful of volunteers will be building a Zulu hut on the East lawn of Hampton Court Palace. In Ingwavuma, a remote rural part of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, women and children have to build homes for their families.
Can the volunteers do the same at Hampton Court? The community of Ingwavuma suffers from extreme poverty, where 40% of the population are HIV+ and are dying of AIDS related illnesses. The life expectancy is just 39 years. Daily living is already a great struggle, water is scarce and food a constant worry. It is such hard work to build a hut when you are sick and hungry. ALL money raised from this project will go directly to Orphan Care, a charity which works in Ingwavuma. Orphan Care is hoping to build the first hospice in the area to provide palliative care for the dying. At the moment there is no support for families and people die without dignity in their huts, with no pain relief. Look out for our beautiful hand beaded AIDS ribbons and bracelets. These are by made by the ladies of Fancy Stitch, Ingwavuma and will be on sale throughout the week. At the end of the week, Saturday 21st August, there will be an evening garden party in honour of the HUT Project. Champagne, home-made canapés and Hummingbird cupcakes will be served on the lawn in front of Sir Christopher Wren’s baroque façade. The Palace will be closed to all other visitors. Terry Gough, the Head Gardener and his deputy will be leading exclusive tours of the privy garden, the exotics and world’s largest vine. Tickets cost: £35 per person. Please contact Gaynor Coppin at coppin.gaynor@gmail.com to obtain tickets. Further information on the HUT Project can be found on the website |
